For, during, while


Grammar:

FOR

Examples:

  • We watched football for three hours yesterday.

(for+period of time – used to say how long something goes on)

  • I’m going away for a week in December.
  • Is she going away for the weekend?

DURING

Examples:

  • My girlfriend fell asleep during the film.

[during+noun (the film) – used to say when something happens]

  • I made new friends during our holiday.
  • It must have snowed during the night. There’s snow everywhere.

or

  • It must have snowed in the night.
  • I’ll pick you up during the afternoon.
  • I’ll pick you up in the afternoon.

BUT!

It snowed for two days. (not during two days)

We do not use during to say how long something goes on.


Compare:

  • My girlfriend fell asleep during the film.

(DURING+noun)

  • My girlfriend fell asleep while she was watching the film.

(WHILE+subject+verb)


  • I made new friends during our holiday.
  • I made new friends while we were on holiday.
