FOR
Examples:
- We watched football for three hours yesterday.
(for+period of time – used to say how long something goes on)
- I’m going away for a week in December.
- Is she going away for the weekend?
DURING
Examples:
- My girlfriend fell asleep during the film.
[during+noun (the film) – used to say when something happens]
- I made new friends during our holiday.
- It must have snowed during the night. There’s snow everywhere.
or
- It must have snowed in the night.
- I’ll pick you up during the afternoon.
- I’ll pick you up in the afternoon.
BUT!
It snowed for two days. (not during two days)
We do not use during to say how long something goes on.
Compare:
- My girlfriend fell asleep during the film.
(DURING+noun)
- My girlfriend fell asleep while she was watching the film.
(WHILE+subject+verb)
- I made new friends during our holiday.
- I made new friends while we were on holiday.
