Grammar:

Expressions which mean if/on condition that:

  • as long as
  • so long as
  • provided (that)
  • providing (that)

Note:

Do NOT use will after unless/as long as/so long as.


  • You can go out tonight as long as you promise me to be home at 12.
  • You can go out tonight so long as you promise me to be home at 12.

(You can go out tonight, but you must promise me to be home at 12. This is a condition)


  • Buying a car is convenient provided that you like to travel.
  • Buying a car is convenient providing that you like to travel.

(=but only if you like to travel)
