Passive (is done/was done)

Grammar:

Compare:

  • This cookie was eaten. (was eaten= passive)

In this sentence the cookie is the subject. What happened to the subject? It was eaten. We use a passive verb was eaten.

  • Emma ate the cookie.

In this sentence Emma is the subject and the cookie is the object. What did Emma do? She ate the cookie. We use an active verb ate.


  • This room is cleaned every day.
  • My phone was stolen.

In these examples we use the passive, but who or what caused the action is unknown or unimportant.

To tell who/what caused the action we use by.

  • This room is cleaned every day by my mom.
  • My phone was stolen by a thief.
